A very successful low alcohol version of Adnams’ award-winning Ghost Ship, a “citrus pale ale” that really lives up to the description. Opening the bottle, the sweet caramel of the malt is topped by a subtle fresh zest of dry hop citrus on the nose and the pour is relaxed and frothy, giving a head that fades while also clinging to the side of the glass. The real surprise comes in the mouth, where a fizzing whack of tart lemon and lime overwhelms the sweetness of the malt, giving a refreshing astringency in the checks and throat that is both deeply beery and very refreshing. As one of the pale ales that first opened our eyes to the extraordinary quality of the new generation of low alcohol beers – and one that’s much in demand in our local pub – we have an enduring loyalty to Ghost Ship 0.5%. There are always a few bottles of this in thelightdrinker.com fridge.
