A delightful off-dry treat and great VFM
ABV:
Typical Price:
£7.00
I’ve written at length about the heroic Riesling winemaker Ernst Loosen and his drive to bring great Rieslings to international markets at sensible prices, whilst maintaining the excellent quality of his brand. And to often to make them drier than had become the norm in Germany. With this wine, sold in several supermarkets for just £7 per bottle, he has pulled off a sort of miracle. Sometimes a vintage is given, sometimes not – I’m not sure it really matters.
Our Riesling tasting panel loved this wine and then were bowled over when they learnt the price (all tasting is label and price-blind). The wine opens with delightful floral mix of apple, stone fruits and roses which is perfectly balanced with a fine astringency leaving it crisp and light. At just 8.5% ABV, this is a pretty much perfect Riesling, not perhaps as layered and complex as an older, finer and more expensive blend but at £7 per bottle from Asda you’d be hard pushed to complain. I urge you to give it a go and think you won’t be disappointed. To date, 11 people have reviewed it for Asda and all eleven give it a perfect 5 stars and say they are converted.
