Relative newcomer Jump/Ship claims to be “the first Scottish brewery dedicated to making world class low-alcohol beer”. Yardarm has everything you could long for in a lager, bar the alcohol. Light, crisp and refreshing, exactly as it claims to be, but with a cascade of complex flavour to thrill the tastebuds, too. The floral zest of the hops (Citra and Styrian Bobek) are a delight from the moment the ring-pull pops, all but bursting to get out of the can. That zestiness is there from the first sip, too, but with a perfectly judged balance of dry biscuity notes that play on the tastebuds, the well-balanced citrus hop seeming to come on in subtle waves, before finally finishing on a properly refreshing, pleasantly bitter note. And, as a bonus, it’s gluten-free and vegan. Overall, we think this is a secret the Scots should not be keeping to themselves and we can’t wait to try the other beers in the Jump/Ship range.
