As good as a de-alcoholised red can get

Typical Price:

Zeno have created here one of the best de-alcoholised red wines that I’ve tasted.  That’s not to say I loved it, or that I’m yet a believer in the pleasures of de-alcoholised wines, but with this offer from Zeno I’m prepared to give it a go.

The drink starts with a spicey bouquet and this aura of being almost a mulled wine pervades the whole.  The body has a fine flavour of red berries and, I’d swear, star anise, all balanced with layered tannins and a decent sweetness, with  a long, dry finish.  The only failing, which seems inevitable without alcohol, is that it is ultimately a little watery.

All in all, there is as much here to satisfy a fan of red wines as I think any de-alcoholised wine can deliver.

Makers Notes

Vibrant ruby red with bright salmon pink edge. Pronounced aromas of red and black forest fruits, sweet spices and sweet green pepper. On the palate, ripe blackberries and raspberries merge with juicy plums and hints of crisp cherry. There is spice, pepper and bright tannin adding weight to a creamy mouthfeel and textured, satisfyingly long finish.

Tasting Notes

  • Colour: Deep red
  • Nose: Spicy and a bit musky
  • Taste: Red fruits, star anise and tannins
  • Mouthfeel: Rounded but with a watery finish
